2010 NFL Mock Draft (Updated 3/13/2010)

Welcome to The Draft Matters' 2010 NFL Mock Draft. This will be updated on a weekly basis to give you the most accurate mock draft on the web.

After some time off, we have updated our mock draft and have made several significant changes throughout the first round. There is a major shake up at the top and picks 1-4 reversed their order. Also, the free agency and trades have drastically altered team needs and has changed their potential pick. There are some guys that keep climbing up draft boards while others are sliding down. Check out the 2010 NFL Mock Draft and let us know your thoughts by leaving comments! Expect more frequent updates from here on out to the draft.

1. QB - Sam Bradford
St. Louis Rams Oklahoma
The combine has brought some uncertainty to the number one spot. Sam Bradford bulked up and looks like he'll be ready to go with his shoulder. All the talk was on Bradford at the combine, and unfortunately it seems like the Rams will use the number one pick on a quarterback with a bum shoulder. Unless the Rams can acquire Michael Vick, they will draft Bradford or Clausen in the first round. Quarterbacks put fans in the stands and win games for teams. Look at the quarterbacks from the Super Bowl: Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. Their teams wouldn't have made it there without them. I still believe the Rams are one Jimmy Clausen away from an 8-8 season. Jimmy Laser Clausen hasn't been getting much credit from other analysts, but he may end up being the superior prospect. However there are rumors that the Rams will draft Suh and trade for Michael Vick. We'll keep you updated if we hear any more rumors but for now, Bradford is our 2010 NFL mock draft pick.
Positions of Need: QB, DT, OLB, CB
Key Free Agents: Kyle Boller (QB), O.J. Atogwe (S), Alex Barron (OT), Leonard Little (DE), Clifton Ryan (DT), David Vobora (OLB)
2. DT - Gerald McCoy
Detroit Lions Oklahoma
Even though Ndonkeykong Suh had an amazing combine, I think the Lions will surprise people and take McCoy with the second pick of the draft. McCoy has actually moved to McShay's highest rated player, and I think he makes more sense for Jim Schwartz's scheme in Detroit. Schwartz doesn't bring pressure often and relies on all four of his defensive linemen to generate a pass rush. This is the one area where McCoy has an edge on Suh which makes me choose it for our 2010 NFL mock draft. Either way, Suh or McCoy, they can't go wrong. The Lions still need a left tackle, but players like Suh and McCoy don't come around every year.
Positions of Need: OT, DT, DE, CB
Key Free Agents: Daniel Bullocks (S), Larry Foote (MLB), Jason Hunter (DE)
3. DT - Ndamukong Suh
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Nebraska
Tampa will draft a defensive player, and they really can't go wrong with either of their top two choices. Either Eric Berry will come on and make Tampa's secondary one of the best in the NFC South, or they go the more conservative route and draft Ndonkeykong Suh who would help stop the run but yet be an effective inside pass rusher. Its hard to mark Berry down this early in our 2010 NFL mock draft, even though there are a number of signs that point to him here. Berry has ties with Lane Kiffin who has ties with Tampa Bay and recently Tampa's current safety was faced with domestic battery charges. Suh or Berry, Tampa's defense will be better in 2010. Tampa has to be ecstatic that Suh is available at pick three.
Positions of Need: DT, WR, DE, OG, CB
Key Free Agents: Antonio Bryant (WR), Barrett Ruud (MLB), Cadillac Williams (RB), Donald Penn (OT), Jeremy Trueblood (OT)
4. QB - Jimmy Clausen
Washington Redskins Notre Dame
New coaching means a new quarterback, especially when your starter is Jason Campbell. The Redskins are solid on defense, but need more weapons on offense. Jason Campbell has had a few surprisingly good games down the stretch, but he's not the answer. Jim Zorn has been fired and Shanahan signed a five year agreement. Campbell doesn't really compare with the likes of Jay Cutler and John Elway. Campbell was tendered and may be the starting quarterback to open the 2010 season, but eventually this will be Clausen's team.
Positions of Need: QB, OT, RB, OG, DE
Key Free Agents: Jason Campbell (QB), Quinton Ganther (RB), Stephon Heyer (OT), Rocky McIntosh (OLB), Casey Rabach (C), Hunter Smith (P)
5. OT - Russell Okung
Kansas City Chiefs Oklahoma State
The Kansas City Chiefs need to fix their offensive line. Matt Cassel does not have enough time in the pocket and he's not terribly elusive. Lucky for the Chiefs, the draft's best tackle is still available at the fifth pick. Kansas City has allowed the sixth most sacks last year and Matt Cassel will need all the help he can get to give this team a winning record. The defense needs addressing, but I think Scott Pioli will be able to retool it with the available free agents, the way he did in New England instead of looking towards the NFL draft.
Positions of Need: OT, S, WR, OLB, ILB
Key Free Agents: Mike Vrabel (OLB), Chris Chambers (WR), Derrick Johnson (ILB), Wade Smith (OG), Corey Mays (ILB), Rusy Niswanger (C), Ryan O'Callaghan (OT)
6. S - Eric Berry
Seattle Seahawks Tennessee
The Seahawks need to address their secondary in the 2010 NFL Draft. Marcus Trufant was establishing himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league but he was not the same player this year after returning from injury. Jordan Babineaux put up big tackle numbers but was often beat in coverage. If they are able to select Eric Berry with the 6th pick, the entire secondary would improve as a whole. Berry would be an immediate starter at free safety, allowing Babineaux to move over to strong safety. Berry's coverage abilities would also take some of the pressure off Trufant, Ken Lucas, and Josh Wilson.
Positions of Need: RB, DE, OT, QB, S
Key Free Agents: Nate Burleson (WR), Olindo Mare (K), Seneca Wallace (QB), Cory Redding (DE), Rob Sims (OG), Chris Spencer (C), David Hawthorne (MLB)
7. CB - Joe Haden
Cleveland Browns Florida
Haden's draft stock slipped because of the combine. His slow 40 time will definitely make some teams think twice about drafting him, especially teams that don't run a cover 2 scheme. Mangini drafted Darelle Revis in the 2007 NFL draft and we all know how that played out. If Mangini thinks of Haden in the same way, a corner back at seven would be a very realistic pick in our mock draft.
Positions of Need: OT, QB, S, LB
Key Free Agents: D'Qwell Jackson (ILB), Brodney Pool (S), Jerome Harrison (RB), Phil Dawson (K), Mike Furrey (WR), Lawrence Vickers (FB), Abram Elam (S)
8. DE - Jason Pierre-Paul
Oakland Raiders South Florida
Jason Pierre-Paul is a one-year wonder and probably just a workout warrior. Derrick Morgan seems like the right choice for best defensive end prospect, but when was the last time Oakland cared who the best prospect was? Its too bad the Raiders can't get one of the top tier quarterbacks and address their biggest need. Even though its obvious Tebow won't get drafted in round one, the Raiders never fail to surprise. The Raiders could also select Bruce Campbell, who had a great 40 time.
Positions of Need: QB, DE, OT, OLB
Key Free Agents: Sebastian Janikowski (K), Richard Seymour (DE), Bruce Gradkowski (QB), Hiram Eugene (S), Thomas Howard (OLB), Kirk Morrison (MLB), Jon Condo (LS), Jon Alston (OLB), Ricky Brown (OLB)
9. OT - Anthony Davis
Buffalo Bills Rutgers
The Bills organization is a mess. Nobody wants to go to Buffalo to coach or play. They might as well join the CFL. The Bills need a quarterback, but will probably wait for somebody like Tony Pike in later rounds. The Bills offensive line is a mess, and they will want to improve to give their best offensive player, Fred Jackson, the greatest opportunity to shine.
Positions of Need: QB, OT, OLB, WR
Key Free Agents: Terrell Owens (WR), Keith Ellison (OLB), Richie Incognito (OG), Bryan Scott (OLB)
10. DE - Derrick Morgan
Jacksonville Jaguars Georgia Tech
Aaron Kampman won't solve all of Jacksonville's pass rushing problems. Somebody like Derrick Morgan could definitely step in and help make a difference opposite Kampmnn. Tim Tebow won't be taken in the first round, so Jacksonville can relax and know their ticket-seller will be available in later rounds. Almost two-thirds of our readers said Tebow will get drafted in either rounds one or two, and I happen to completely agree. After busting on a pass rusher in 2008, Jacksonville will try to get it right with their first pick in the 2010 NFL draft. They don't have a second round pick this year (traded to the Patriots), so no room for mistakes. It's Morgan in our 2010 NFL Mock Draft, but if it's not him, it will probably be another defensive end.
Positions of Need: DE, OLB, QB, RB, WR
Key Free Agents: Clint Ingram (OLB), Reggie Hayward (DE)
11. WR - Dez Bryant
Denver Broncos (from Bears) Oklahoma State
The Broncos will most likely be without Brandon Marshall next year, which makes them focus on grabbing a wide receiver early on. Dez Bryant would be a great replacement and should fill Marshall's shoes. I am hoping Josh McDaniels figures out a way to use Eddie Royal, because together they could be one of the best young pair of receivers in the league. The defense has its holes, but Kyle Orton needs all the help he can get.
Positions of Need: QB, ILB, WR, DE
Key Free Agents: Elvis Dumervil (OLB), Brandon Marshall (WR), Kyle Orton (QB), Tony Scheffler (TE), Matt Prater (K), Chris Kuper (OG)
12. DT - Dan Williams
Miami Dolphins Tennessee
People might think this is a little early for Dan Williams, but he is the probably the best specimen for a pure 3-4 nose tackle. Not only will Miami be getting the best player at this position, but it also fills a huge need as Jason Fegurson is injury prone and 36. He doesn't have much left, and it wouldnt surprise me if Dan Williams was the nose tackle to finish the season.
Positions of Need: WR, TE, NT, OLB
Key Free Agents: Chad Pennington (QB), Jason Taylor (OLB), Ronnie Brown (RB), Anthony Fasano (TE), Davone Bess (WR), Jason Ferguson (NT)
13. OT - Bryan Bulaga
San Francisco 49ers Iowa
Bryan Bulaga improved his draft stock with the combine, and is now sitting pretty in the middle of round 1 of our 2010 NFL mock draft. There have been very convincing rumors that the Niners acknowledge their biggest need as a right tackle and they will address it early in the 2010 NFL draft. They would love to have a quarterback here, but with Locker staying in school and the two best quarterbacks off the board, patching their offensive line would be the next best option. Also, improving an offensive line can lead to improving the quarterback play, which the 49ers need.
Positions of Need: QB, CB, OT, DE
Key Free Agents: Dre Bly (CB), Aubrayo Frankin (NT), David Bass (OG), Tony Pashos (OT)
14. RB - C.J. Spiller
Seattle Seahawks (from Broncos) Clemson
The Seahawks are coming off a very difficult 5-11 season. They have some good pieces in place offensively with T.J. Houshmanzadeh, John Carlson, Deion Branch and Matt Hasselbeck. However, they lack an explosive threat that can score any time he touches the ball. There have been talks about Branch going back to New England. C.J. Spiller increased his draft stock with a tremendous combine and made him a viable pick at this point in the first round. Newly appointed head coach, Pete Carroll, explicitly said they need to run the ball effectively which makes Spiller a perfect fit. In our 2010 NFL mock draft, Seattle will be taking Spiller with one of their two first round picks if given the chance.
Positions of Need: RB, DE, OT, QB, S
Key Free Agents: Nate Burleson (WR), Olindo Mare (K), Seneca Wallace (QB), Cory Redding (DE), Rob Sims (OG), Chris Spencer (C), David Hawthorne (MLB)
15. LB - Rolando McClain
New York Giants Alabama
The Giants desperately need to strengthen the interior of their defense; both at defensive tackle and middle linebacker. Thankfully the Giants get two fixes at safety, one in the form of Kenny Philips returning and the other with the arrival of Antrel Rolle. The Giants get lucky as McClain slides to pick 15 and they fill their biggest need with the best linebacker in the draft.
Positions of Need: S, MLB, DE, OT, RB
Key Free Agents: Domenik Hixon (WR), Sinorice Moss (WR), Barry Cofield (DT)
16. CB - Kyle Wilson
San Francisco 49ers (from Panthers) Boise State
You can expect the 49ers to select a defensive player with one of their first rounders with Mike Singletary in charge. They have some great pieces in place at linebacker with Patrick Willis and Manny Lawson, and they recently drafted Ricky Jean-Francois to help on the defensive line. A shut down corner to play opposite Nate Clements is a good bet in this position. Kyle Wilson turned heads during drills and played well in the Senior Bowl. He can step in right away and help his team. There's a balance of power in the NFC West with Kurt Warner retiring, and the 49ers have a definite shot at winning the division.
Positions of Need: QB, CB, OT, DE
Key Free Agents: Dre Bly (CB), Aubrayo Frankin (NT), David Bass (OG), Tony Pashos (OT)
17. DE - Carlos Dunlap
Tennessee Titans Florida
Vince Young has proven he is the quarterback of the future and Chris Johnson is a game-changer who led the league with over 2000 rushing yards. Tennessee's 0-6 start was not just because of Kerry Collins and was partially because of injuries in the secondary (Cortland Finnegan). The secondary is worth a look as they may try to establish depth by drafting a defensive back, but I think this pick will be Carlos Dunlap to step in and replace Vanden Bosch. Dunlap has his off the field issues, but is at a good value in the middle of round one of our 2010 NFL mock draft.
Positions of Need: CB, S, DE, TE
Key Free Agents: Stephen Tulloch (MLB), Keith Bulluck (OLB), Alge Crumpler (TE), Jevon Kearse (DE), Kyle Vanden Bosch (DE), Bo Scaife (TE), LenDale White (RB), Kevin Mawae (C), Tony Brown (DT)
18. CB - Patrick Robinson
Pittsburgh Steelers Florida State
With or without Troy Polamalu, the Steelers need another defensive back to help bring this defense together. Ike Taylor hasn't been playing at a very high level and its obvious corner is a need. Patrick Robinson made some great plays in the Senior Bowl, but was also suspect at times. He has tons of potential and his hard-hitting nature makes him fit in well the defense in Pittsburgh.
Positions of Need: CB, G, OT, NT
Key Free Agents: Willie Parker (RB), Ryan Clark (S), Tyrone Carter (S), William Gay (CB), Jeff Reed (K), Casey Hampton (NT), Willie Colon (OT), Daniel Sepulveda (P)
19. OLB - Sean Weatherspoon
Atlanta Falcons Missouri
Atlanta's pass defense was a mess last year. The Falcons have addressed the need by throwing large amounts of money at Dunta Robinson. Atlanta could go two routes here and either draft a safety (Earl Thomas or Taylor Mays) or grab Sean Weatherspoon as he's been climbing up draft boards and will significantly improve their front seven. Our 2010 NFL mock draft agrees with the latter of the two options.
Positions of Need: CB, S, OLB
Key Free Agents: Jerious Norwood (RB), Harvey Dahl (OG), Tyson Clabo (OT), Brian Williams (CB), Brent Grimes (CB)
20. DT - Brian Price
Houston Texans UCLA
The Texans finally finished the season with a winning record! Houston had one of the worst running games in the league and they will need to find a complement back to Slaton, but I think they will look in later rounds (Slaton was a third round pick). The Texans will probably look to improve their defensive line here, and Brian Price has been climbing up draft boards. They will also need to fill the large hole left at corner back with the departure of Dunta Robinson.
Positions of Need: RB, S, DT, CB
Key Free Agents: Owen Daniels (TE), DeMeco Ryans (MLB), Bernard Pollard (S), Dunta Robinson (CB), Kevin Walter (WR), Ryan Moats (RB)
21. S - Earl Thomas
Cincinnati Bengals Texas
Mike Zimmer has done an incredible job with this defensive squad and its amazing the Bengals actually have the best scoring defense in the league. Also, Antonio Bryant signed a four year deal and will give the passing game a much-needed boost. As for this pick, it could go a number of ways. The defensive ends are performing better than expected without Antwan Odom and the linebackers are going to be a serious force for the next several years. Tight end, defensive tackle, and safety are the primary team needs and expect them to address them in both the free agency and the 2010 NFL draft.
Positions of Need: DT, TE, S, WR
Key Free Agents: Shayne Graham (K), Tank Johnson (DT), Roy Williams (S), Bobbie Williams (OG), Kyle Cook (C), Daniel Coats (TE), Rashad Jeanty (OLB), Brandon Johnson (OLB)
22. DT - Jared Odrick
New England Patriots Penn State
What happened to the Patriot's Defense? Everybody thought pass rusher was the Patriot's primary need last year, but they didn't address it in the draft, and I think they're regretting it. However, because of the low success rate of pass-rushers in the first round, I think they will address it with one of their later picks. I will be shocked if the Patriots draft an offensive player in the first round. Belichick has a much better track record when it comes to drafting defensive players early on. Since he got to New England, his first round defensive players were: Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, Brandon Meriweather, and Jerod Mayo. Every single player has been a key contributor. His offensive selections, besides Logan Mankins, haven't made a big splash: Benjamin Watson, Daniel Graham, and Fumble-on-the-goal-line Laurence Maroney. With Jarvis Green signing with the Broncos, Odrick will be a great addition to play defensive end in 3-4. Bill can get his running back, wide receiver, and outside linebacker in round two.
Positions of Need: RB, WR, OG, DE, OLB
Key Free Agents: Jarvis Green (DE), Vince Wilfork (NT), Ben Watson (TE), Stephen Neal (OG), Logan Mankins (OG), Stephan Gostkowski (K), Leigh Bodden (CB), Kevin Faulk (HB), Derrick Burgess (DE), Tully Banta-Cain (OLB)
23. OT - Bruce Campbell
Green Bay Packers Maryland
Green Bay is another example of a team having a great switch to the 3-4 defense. Last year's draft picks B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews made this possible by giving them a solid nose tackle and a great 3-4 outside pass rusher. The 2010 draft will be focused on retooling the offensive line. The Packers need a solid offensive tackle so bad, they may even trade up to get their stud. I feel bad for Aaron Rodgers because he has so much potential but doesn't have the offensive line to protect him. Sure, he holds on the ball for a second too long at times, but seriously, the Packers have let up the most sacks this season and a tackle is their biggest need.
Positions of Need: OLB, CB, S, OT
Key Free Agents: Aaron Kampman (OLB), Atari Bigby (S), Nick Collins (S), Chad Clifton (OT), Ryan Pickett (NT), Mark Tauscher (OT), Daryn Colledge (OG), Johnny Jolly (DE), Tramon Williams (CB)
24. LB - Brandon Spikes
Philadelphia Eagles Florida
The Eagles have had trouble finding someone who wants to keep the job at middle linebacker after losing Stewart Bradley to injury. Throughout the season, seven different players have started at the position. Despite this, their rush defense still ranks 9th in the league because of excellent play on the defensive line from players like Trent Cole and Brodrick Bunkley. Bradley might not be the same explosive player he was, and Brandon Spikes could really solidify this linebacking corps with his versatility.
Positions of Need: DT, OLB, RB, CB
Key Free Agents: Josh Avant (WR), Nick Cole (OG), Chris Gocong (OLB), Ellis Hobbs (CB), Leonard Weaver (FB), Sean Jones (S), Saverio Rocca (P), Omar Gaither (MLB), Akeem Jordan (OLB)
25. DE - Everson Griffen
Baltimore Ravens USC
The Ravens have been very active this offseason signing Donte Stallworth and trading for Anquan Boldin. Their offense has incredible potential and this team might be ready for a deep run in the playoffs. The defense is aging and Everson Griffen would be a good pick to get another aggressive defender on the roster.
Positions of Need: WR, OLB, CB, S
Key Free Agents: Derrick Mason (WR), Dawan Landry (S), Mark Clayton (WR), Le'Ron McClain (FB), Dwan Edwards (DE), Jared Gaither (OT), Marshal Yanda (OT)
26. TE - Jermaine Gresham
Arizona Cardinals Oklahoma
The Cardinals are going to be a completely different team now that Kurt Warner has retired. There are a few holes on this squad, but first and foremost is giving Matt Leinart a reliable target to dump the ball off to. With Anquan Boldin leaving, Jermaine Gresham could become a staple of this offense.
Positions of Need: OT, NT, CB, QB
Key Free Agents: Karlos Dansby (OLB), Mike Gandy (OT), Neil Rackers (K), Steve Breaston (WR), Deuce Lutui (OG), Lyle Sendlein (C)
27. OT - Trent Willaims
Dallas Cowboys Oklahoma
Marc Columbo's injury hurt the Cowboys in the regular season and Flozell Adams went down in the playoffs. Watching the NFC divisional game between the Cowboys and the Vikings was painful. After Flozell Adams got hurt, the Cowboys couldn't do anything on offense. They may try to solidify their offensive line by drafting a tackle here. After trading away most of their early picks in last year's draft for Roy Williams and botching the rest of their picks, the Cowboys need to be successful the 2010 NFL draft. Idaho standout guard, Mike Iupati, is another tempting pick as well.
Positions of Need: OT, S, CB, ILB, WR
Key Free Agents: Miles Austin (WR), Gerald Sensabaugh (S), Marcus Spears (DE)
28. DT - Terrence Cody
San Diego Chargers Alabama
The Chargers have started four different nose tackles thus far this season and Terrence Cody's 370 pounds would take up a lot of space in the middle of their 3-4 defense. If someone like Cody is not available, the Chargers could draft a running back. Darren Sproles is a free agent and LaDainian Tomlinson's career in San Diego is officially over. Cody showed up to the Senior Bowl overweight but dropped his weight to 349 for his Pro Day. Because of the scarcity of nose tackles and the increase of 3-4 teams, Cody will likely be a round two talent selected in round one.
Positions of Need: NT, RB, OLB, OT
Key Free Agents: Shawne Merriman (OLB), Darren Sproles (RB), Vincent Jackson (WR), Marcus McNeill (OT)
29. S - Taylor Mays
New York Jets USC
The Jets have traded for Antonio Cromartie and have dealt away Kerry Rhodes. Even though the Jets' organization has said they're happy with the safeties currently on the roster, Taylor Mays would be a perfect fit for Rex Ryan's aggressive defense. His size/speed combination will allow Ryan to use him in various ways in both coverage and blitzing. Taylor Mays needs some strong coaching, and he would be with one of the best defensive minds if he got drafted by the New York Football Jets.
Positions of Need: DE, NT, WR, S
Key Free Agents: Braylon Edwards (WR), Brad Smith (WR), Leon Washington (RB), Tony Richardson (FB), Jay Feely (K)
30. G - Mike Iupati
Minnessota Vikings Idaho
Brett Favre ends another season on an interception. Why he threw that ball instead of running the seven yards to put the Vikings in field goal range is beyond me. Maybe he was trying to avoid one last hit at the end of the run. Favre was abused this game and it really made me reconsider this pick in the 2010 NFL mock draft. Colt McCoy isn't first round material and a player like Idaho guard Mike Iupati would improve the offensive line for the Vikings. Iupati had an great Senior Bowl and is ready to be a starter in the NFL.
Positions of Need: QB, DT, G, CB
Key Free Agents: Chester Taylor (RB), Tavaris Jackson (QB), Naufahu Tahi (FB), Ray Edwards (DE)
31. C - Maurkice Pouncey
Indianapolis Colts Florida
Bill Polian blamed the Super Bowl loss on the offensive line, and he might send a message by spending the first pick in an interior lineman. Pouncey would be able to fill in at guard or center and could eventually take over for Jeff Saturday.
Positions of Need: S, OLB, MLB, DE
Key Free Agents: Antoine Bethea (S), Gary Brackett (MLB), Charlie Johnson (OT), Daniel Muir (DT)
32. OLB - Sergio Kindle
New Orleans Saints Texas
The Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints have quite a few players that could depart due to free agency, and it will difficult to keep them all. Scott Fujita left for the Browns and you can expect the Saints to upgrade the position through the NFL Draft. Sergio Kindle is one of the top outside linebackers in this class, and the Saints would gladly select him with the final pick of the first round as they do in our 2010 NFL mock draft.
Positions of Need: OLB, CB, DT, S
Key Free Agents: Darren Sharper (S), Jahri Evans (OG), Roman Harper (S), Lance Moore (WR), Pierre Thomas (RB), Mike Bell (RB), Zach Strief (OG), Remi Ayodele (DT), Jermon Bushrod (OT), Scott Fujita (OLB)
